    Outer Hip Pain AKA Trochanteric Bursitis

    Have you got pain in the outer part of your Hip? Is it painful when you lie on it?

    You probably have Outer Hip Pain! We call it lateral Hip Pain which means the same thing but an old term for pain in this area is trochanteric bursitis.

     

    What are the symptoms?

    The main symptoms are pain in the outer part of your hip, sometimes into your groin and sometimes down the outer part of your upper thigh.  It is normally painful to lie on and painful with walking a lot or going up and down stairs.

     

    Who gets it?

    2 very different groups get this problem; Women over 50 and Runners. Both for quite different reasons.

     

    What is it?

    In the past it was thought that pain in the outer hip was due to inflammation of the trochanteric bursa. Hence the name trochanteric bursitis. A bursa is a thin fluid filled sac that sits between tendons and bones.

     

    Science and research has now shown the trochanteric bursa is rarely the cause of pain in the outer hip.

     

    Some pain can be caused by hip joint problems BUT most pain in the outer hip is caused by the gluteal tendons.

    These are the tendons attaching your butt muscles to the bony outer part of your hip at the top of your leg. As a result it now gets called gluteal tendinopathy which means 'a problem with the tendon'.

     

    Do I need an x-ray or scan?

    If you have gluteal tendinopathy, no, you do not need a scan. If following our examination and assessment we find that this is NOT the cause of your pain and we feel you need a scan of either your back or Hip, we will write to your GP or consultant to arrange one.

     

    Do I need an injection?

    If you are reading this and you have already had an injection then you know the answer to this! In almost all cases an injection will NOT help. There are the odd cases that an injection is helpful but we will be able to make a recommendation once we have assessed you.

     

    How do I get better?

    This one is easy, REHAB. Yes that is right. NO machines NO acupuncture.  They are a waste of your time!
